Falling Into A Coma

"Falling into A Coma" is one of those songs that started out in a weird tuning for me and fell into place as soon I was able to find the right musical key. I ended up writing the song about my worries of going into surgery and not waking up as a result. It turned into something much more when I ended up rewriting parts of the song to reflect the concept of the EP, Everglow. I changed some lyrics and ended up writing an entirely new bridge based on the scene described in "Everglow."

The bridge of the song is especially important to me as in the first iteration of the song, it was devoid of lyrics.  I had shown the early recording of "Falling Into A Coma" to a friend of mine and when the bridge part came, he turned up the radio thinking the song was done.  I was shook up a bit when this happened and became determined to fix this. I ended up writing two melodies and the one that stuck with me was the one that repeats three times and goes,

"My mind still lingers in the past

With crashing cars and broken glass

My heart is torn, my head is numb

I will wait till you wake up"

It was perfect in the way that it describes the song and the album itself in just a few sentences.  Overall, I was very pleased the way the lyrics flowed.

"Falling Into A Coma" is driving, relentless. and a very fun song to play live. The chorus vocal melody is mirrored by the lead guitar and provides support to the song.  It is a simple chord pattern that allows the lyrics to be meaningful. The final piano part at the end represents the eulogy for the young girl who passes away.  It is the segue to the next song on the record, "Saving Grace With A Ghost."
